Where to donate furniture in Kansas City
If you're emptying a house, the good furniture is the easy part and the hard part. Easy, because somebody wants it. Hard, because it's heavy, the donation centers have rules, and you've got a deadline. Here's where to start, with a focus on the Northland.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Habitat KC's ReStores take gently used furniture, working appliances, and building supplies, and they offer free donation pickup. The Northland store is at 8516 N Oak Trafficway. One catch: Habitat's general rule is that upholstered and leather pieces have to be free of tears, stains, and pet damage.

Thrift stores that come to you
Red Racks Thrift Store, run by Disabled American Veterans, schedules free pickups through pickupmydonation.com, and its pickup zone covers much of the Northland. Pickup slots fill up, so book before you need the room empty.
Smaller Northland thrift shops
The Arc Thrift Shop has locations in Gladstone, Liberty, and Smithville. Smaller shops have less floor space, so call before you load a couch into a truck.
Why not just use the city's bulky pickup?
You can, if you live in Kansas City. But the city's own website says bulky pickup items go to the landfill, and it asks residents to try donating first. A dresser that could furnish someone's first apartment deserves better.
What usually can't be donated
- Mattresses and box springs, at most places
- Upholstered furniture with stains, tears, or pet damage
- Broken or water-damaged pressboard furniture
- Older tube TVs
Every organization sets its own rules, and they change. Always call first.
When there's too much to sort
Donation works well for ten good pieces. It doesn't work for a full house on a deadline, where every item needs a decision and a ride. That's the job we do: sort first, donate what's usable, and haul the rest, with no minimum.
